Plantar Fasciitis

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the thick band of tissue (called the plantar fascia) that runs along the arch of the foot. Dysfunctional muscles in the legs and feet can be caused by chronic spinal issues that disrupt proper nerve function into the lower extremities. This motor weakness in the legs and feet can cause excess strain, architectural changes in the foot, and inflammation of the fascia (connective tissue) in the feet.

People with plantar fasciitis tend to experience symptoms like:

  • Heel pain, usually described as sharp or stabbing
  • Pain that gets worse after prolonged standing or after getting up after sitting or lying down for a long time

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

It's not always clear why plantar fasciitis develops, but there are risk factors that can make someone more likely to experience it. These risk factors include:

  • Dysfunctional muscles in the legs and feet can be caused by chronic spinal issues that disrupt proper nerve function into the lower extremities. This motor weakness in the legs and feet can cause excess strain, architectural changes in the foot, and inflammation of the fascia (connective tissue) in the feet.
  • High-impact exercises like running, jumping, and dancing (or any movement that increases stress and tension on the plantar fascia)
  • A sudden and significant increase in the amount of exercise or physical activity performed on a daily or weekly basis
  • Certain types of occupations that require a lot of standing and walking, such as nursing, teaching, and factory work
  • Being between the ages of 40 and 60
  • Certain bodily characteristics that can increase the amount of force on the plantar fascia, such as a high or low arch in the foot, weak hip muscles, poor posture, or an unusual walking pattern
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
